Colony Kıbrıs
Colony Kıbrıs
Some artistic works were requested by the Cyprus Colony Hotel for the exterior facade renovation. In this area, the hotel had niche sections with a height of over two meters. These parts were supported by a wrought iron detail in neoclassical style. In addition, the interiors were to be renovated in some areas and we were asked to support this with artistic works.
We created three different approaches: the first was abstract, the second semifigurative and the third figurative sculptures. Four different goddesses were chosen for the figurative sculptures. One of these goddesses is Aphrodite, a goddess already mentioned in Cyprus’ own mythology sources. The other goddesses were chosen by considering them in their own meanings. We then modeled their one-to-one designs. At the point where these models reached a certain maturity, the production process started. The production took place in our sculpture workshop in Izmir at that time, and then it was transferred to Cyprus.
Here, since we wanted the figuration to have multiple details, we preferred the mold-making method and each of the individual sculptures was modeled in clay. Molds were taken from these models and cast by combining them with a solution in which the natural material of marble was mixed. In this way, we both maintained the effect of the natural material and overcame the difficulties of the sculpting method. Because to get a good result with the chiseling method in such a large and detailed work, you would have to wake up Michelangelo and bring him from his place. Jokes aside, modern methods were used to achieve better results. In this way, more detailed results could be achieved in which the marble could show itself
Natural materials are strong if they are of good quality. Choosing natural materials is advantageous in this sense. Materials that are permanent and suitable for outdoor effects will last for generations. In addition, the wear and tear of natural materials can sometimes provide added value to the artistic process. Time takes its place on the stage as a pleasant factor that shapes the work. In the artworks we are realizing, using natural materials, if we find it right for the project, ensures the emergence of a process that makes us happy in terms of these effects.
